Mass Effect 3: Space Edition San Francisco Update!
thegossipgamer:
It started off well…
But then one balloon got stuck in a 150 ft. tree…
About 10 super loyal fans were trying to get it down with a rope, but to no avail.
Apparently they attempted the old “baseball tied to a rope” trick: no dice. So now the team is heading to Home Depot to potentially construct a massive slingshot, which I can’t wait to see pictures of. Good luck,...

I thought my ask was open…? If there’s something wrong with it, please tell me and I’ll try and fix it, but as far as I know it’s fine. I’ve been getting tons of asks recently, too, so I think it works.

Sequels can get really messy. A balance must be kept between making appropriate changes and keeping in line with the series. Two audiences must be considered: fans, who may be sensitive to the minutest changes; and new consumers, who will hopefully become fans with time.
Needless to say, this can get complicated. The worst sort of vitriol and nastiness can spew from spurned fans, and there is...

Running on fumes...: Soul Calibur V: Sexism and... →
chacusha:

thegamingmuse:
Soul Calibur has always been a very sexist series.
It seems not a game can go by that doesn’t include sexualized females, breasts that are impossibly large and move in odd ways, and stereotypical depictions of female warriors. Soul Calibur V is no different…
Interesting essay on Pyrrha and interesting rebuttal. I think what the original article misses is that,...

Mom plays Mass Effect
My mother is driving the Mako on Noveria.
She comes across some enemies, and starts shooting at them. ”Get the missile tower,” I say, “Then drive over the little guys.”
Said little guys are standing in front of a tunnel. Mom decides to move forward. ”How about I just drive now and avoid everyone?”
So she starts driving forward, but somehow manages to...

Mom plays Mass Effect
Me: Mom, what are you doing? Just go that way!
Mom: I’m just following the blue dots!
Me: … what?
Mom: The blue dots! On the little map in the corner!
Me: You mean the thing that represents you?
Mom: No, the ones behind me!
Me: … mom, those are the two characters behind you. They have no idea where to go.
Mom: … but I thought I was supposed to follow...

Mom plays Mass Effect
“I tried playing Mass Effects while you were at school.”
“You did? You played without me? I’m so proud! … wait, you ‘tried’?”
“Yeah… I got the Xbox on and everything but I couldn’t make the game go.”

PAUSE: This PlayStation Vita ad says everything...
hyrulechozo:
killscreendaily:
Explaining to your friends exactly why you play games can be a tricky proposition, but Dutch agency 180 Amsterdam does so beautifully in this new spot for the PlayStation Vita. The ad is directed by Cary Fukunaga (who won the Sundance Dramatic Directing award for Sin Nombre), and I found the bit on exploration particularly stirring.

I guess I can understand how you feel… but you just described way more than video games. You described the world.
“Constantly being reminded that women are supposed to be desirable, beautiful, in love with a man”
Hell, that’s practically every Disney Princess. This is a “formula” that’s been here since the beginning of time.
I just don’t get it…...

I just don’t understand how you are “harmed” by a video game over sexualizing/stereotyping women…
Sexualization, on its own, isn’t inherently evil. It’s the fact that sexualization is the only characterization most female video game characters are given that makes it bad.
Some male characters - very few - are sexualized. But they are also a million...

Mom is now officially a Spectre!
Also, I think I can already tell how her game is going to go.
She has more renegade points because of the backgrounds she picked, but she usually takes paragon options. Garrus and Ashley go with her everywhere, and when I asked her if she planned on romancing Kaiden, she said, “Ewwww.”
(no offence meant, that’s just what my sixty year old mother said, verbatim.)

My mother got lost in Chora's Den and Tali died.
“GO LEFT - LEFT! YOUR OTHER LEFT!”
“HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS?”
“BECAUSE YOU JUST CAME IN THAT WAY, DON’T YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU CAME IN?”
“NOO!!!”
“OKAY FINE JUST GO OUT THAT DOOR - THAT’S NOT A DOOR GODDAMMIT! YOU JUST MISSED THE DOOR!”
“HOWD YOU KNOW IT WAS A DOOR!?”

“Mom, stop! You can’t fight every enemy in Chora’s Den alone!”
“Why not? My team abandoned me!”
“No, you accidentally commanded them to stay behind! You need to fix this!”
“No I can do it alone! I’M GOING IT ALONE! I DON’T NEED THOSE TRAITORS!”

“Okay, mom, you have to choose two of these guys to come with you.”
“What about those ones?”
“You haven’t met them yet, you can’t use them.”
“But who should I bring?”
“Whoever you want.”

Mom Plays Mass Effect (Again)
“Okay, I’m ready to play!”
*stomps up to the mess of video games in front of the tv, and looks down*
“Which one is it?”
*after a short deliberation, happily grabs the ps2 controller and stands up, holding it as if she’s ready to take on the world*

The Problem with Games.... Is gamers.
jogosity:
There. I said it.
Gamers are the root of the problem. They’re my problem because I’m a game designer and I’m part of the problem because I’m a gamer myself.
It’s a terrible state of affairs.
Here’s why gamers are such a problem. It comes in the form of this quote, a tweet passed on by a friend of mine. The origin doesn’t matter.

Formal Petition to BioWare →
foxybcosplay:
Hey lovelies. Sorry if this is already making the rounds, but I didn’t see it anywhere on my dash, so here goes.
As yet, BioWare Corp has not made an official announcement regarding the abuse and harassment of Jennifer Hepler. Regardless of whether you agree with Jen’s opinions on videogames, what they should be, and how she writes for them, what these “fans” have done is...
