Preliminary Review of Prototype 2 (And POCs in videogames)

So, I always try to find POC’s in video games. So much so that I think when Tomb Raider Legend came out, I pretended she was Brazilian and subtitled the Portuguese just for my own alternate reality world.

I played Prototype 1, rented copy back when Blockbuster was still around. I got it because, well, honestly I liked the silhouette on the cover. Zombie-esque disease take over? I’m game.

What really sold me on the game was, in essence, the graphics, the gameplay, and then of course the story. I know many gamers skip cutscenes, but I don’t. The idea of a military cover up, military against citizens; I ate that shit up. It was like legitimizing experiences my family members have had, what my friends [and their family] experiences, etc.

So when I heard that Prototype 2 was being released, and Black male was the lead? I was like, BALLER. But then, apprehensions set in.

My main concern has always been this with male POCs, specifically Black males, is what my father calls the “Luke Cage Almost Looking Not Human” syndrome. In movies, comics, and recently video games, Black men are portrayed as like hyper-muscled. In fact, I am going to try and get some photos to show comparisons, but their muscles are overly defined and don’t reach real proportions. This is true of MANY males in comic books, however, I think the muscles defined in Black superheroes are targeted to ultimately make them look scarier, and quite honestly, more animal (see: characterizing Black individuals as apes). The muscles that tend to be super imposed are trapezius and deltoids, and pecs. See: Luke Cage, Cyborg.

So honestly, that is my INITIAL FEAR going into this video game. I do know that his help is predominately POC, he’s going after Alex Mercer (a white male) and I am just worried about the Luke Cage Syndrome.

The craftsmanship on this set of Triforce jewelry looks incredible. I especially love how the necklace that looks like a back of a coin. Most Triforce jewelry just includes the symbol or the crest so it’s a nice change to actually see the words of “Wisdom, Courage and Power” on a piece.

That’s right— a bunch of studios have decided to discount their games to celebrate the fact that they can!
